The Essence Music Festival is an annual music festival that celebrates African American music and culture. Dating back since 1995, the festival has been home to some of the biggest musical acts, with more recent headliners being Beyonce Knowles and this year’s festival queen, Janet Jackson. Having taken place from July 2-4 in New Orleans, Louisiana, where it is held every year (with the exception of 2006 where it was relocated to Houston, Texas as a result of Hurricane Katrina), this year’s festival has been the most attended to date, selling out the entire Louisiana Superdome.
On Tuesday, August 24th the only thing that sparkled more than Katy Perry’s bedazzled outfit and matching microphone was her voice. Letterman’s lollipop-laden, candy-coated, and sundae-saddled stage was the perfect setting for Katy Perry’s bubbly, bodacious performance. From the start, her set overflowed with energy and passion—not once did the sold-out audience dare to stop dancing. Celebrating the release date of her third album (her second on Capitol Records), Teenage Dream, Perry was exuberant, and her excitement bubbled over, infecting the entire crowd. The boys of Maroon 5 are having one amazing summer: “Misery,” the first single off their upcoming album Hands All Over, is dominating the charts, and they also happen to be the stars of VEVO‘s first ever Summer Sets concert series! The band recently partnered with VEVO to perform an exclusive set for a group of select fans at New York City’s Empire Hotel, and only VEVO has live footage that will make you feel like you’ve got front-row seats. We’ll be bringing VEVO fans even more live concert experiences with the just-announced “Unstaged: An Original Series from American Express.”
Partnering with our friends at American Express and YouTube, we’ll live stream five concerts over the remainder of the year. The series will feature some of the music industry’s breakthrough artists playing at landmark venues across the country, tapping some of today’s most influential filmmakers to direct the live-streams, and use digital and social media to connect the online audience to the live shows in unexpected ways. The series is scheduled to also feature a variety of surprise musical guest performances along the way.
Officially beginning August 5, “Unstaged” will kick-off with Arcade Fire live from Madison Square Garden in New York City. The performance will be live-streamed from the world’s most famous arena and will coincide with the band’s highly anticipated third album release, The Suburbs (Merge Records) on August 3. John Legend and The Roots will join the “Unstaged” lineup later this year, with a complete list of artists set to be unveiled in the coming months.
